Dr Hayo to Speak on Dementia at Neuro Conference
Neurology charity Headway Suffolk is delighted to announce that Dr Hilda Hayo will be a keynote speaker at its fourth Neuro Conference on Wednesday 17 October 2018 at Kesgrave Conference Centre, Twelve Acre Approach, Kesgrave.
Dr Hayo has been the Chief Admiral Nurse and CEO for Dementia UK since 2013. Dementia UK provides specialist dementia support for families through its Admiral Nurse service. A dual registered nurse, she has over 38 years’ experience of working with people diagnosed with dementia and their families.
During this time, Hilda has held senior positions in clinical services, hospital management and higher education. She held Principal Lecturer posts at both London South Bank University and University of Northampton, specialising in older people’s mental health, dementia and community care.
Hilda is particularly proud of setting up a nurse-led Younger People with Dementia service in Northamptonshire and still retains a small clinical caseload of families living with the effects of young onset dementia.
Her doctorate focused on how and why social connectedness changes in families living with the effects of behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.
She has recently published a book, along with two other colleagues, on young onset dementia and identifying how to deliver better and more appropriate support and care for individuals with the diagnosis and their families.
Headway Suffolk supports persons living with dementia, including holding a group every second Friday of the month in Ipswich for persons living with the condition and their family carer.
The charity hopes to work closely with Dementia UK and the Admiral Nurses it supports and trains, who attended last year’s Conference. When things get challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work alongside people with dementia, their families and carers: giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. Dr Hayo’s talk is being kindly sponsored by East of England Co-Op.
Dr Hayo joins scientist and health expert Professor Robert Winston as the two confirmed speakers so far.
Headway Suffolk has attracted huge interest in its first three Conferences, with author Jane Hawking talking about her life as a family carer in 2017, famed scientist Stephen Hawking making a rare public appearance to discuss his life with motor neurone disease in 2016, and local brain injury survivor Andrew Renton taking his first public steps in 21 years in 2015.
This year’s event promises to be another highlight in Suffolk’s calendar with Dr Hayo and Prof Winston set to be joined by other eminent keynote speakers (to be announced in due course) to address guests on a broad range of subjects related to brain injury and neurological conditions.
Please note previous date issued as October 10 was incorrect.
